Recommended by the Milestones Clinical Team as an excellent resouce to better understand some of the physical and psychological elements involved with eating disorders as well as family dynamics.
"Anatomy of a Food Addiction" by Anne Katherine, MA -
Excellent resource for understanding some of the addictive components of eating disorders as well as an explanation of some of the components of successful treatment. This text is given to all patients who enter the Milestones Program.
"Constructive Living" by David Reynolds, Ph.D. - [1984 edition]
Although not written specifically about eating disorders, the text does a credible job of explaining a practical approach to therapy and treatment in general. This is another text that is issued to all Milestones patients and is the central text from which some of the groups at Milestones are formulated. The principles of "Constructive Living" offer a more practical alternative to most forms of traditional therapies - especially for those suffering with an eating disorder or related issues such as depression or chemical dependencies.
"Walking on Eggshells" by Jane Isay-
-Navigating the Delicate Relationship Between Adult Children and Parents - This text offers an excellent description of adult children, their parents, and the dynamics of these relationships. It is of particular relevance for parents of eating disordered adult children.
"I Hate You-don't leave me" by Jerold Kreisman, M.D.-
Offers readers a thorough and no nonsense understanding of the "Borderline Personality" often accompanying patients who suffer with an eating disorder. Also includes some suggestions for family therapy and resources to better cope with someone who suffers with a borderline personality disorder or with some of the borderline traits often seen among those with an eating disorder.
