About Milestones In Recovery

About Milestones In Recovery – Transforming Lives, One Step at a Time

At Milestones, we offer a beacon of hope and expertise for those suffering from eating disorders and the challenges that often accompany them. Our commitment to evidence-based treatment and professionalism within a “real-world” setting is what makes us unique. Our mission is to serve as a sanctuary for anyone seeking a new way of life – a life we proudly call “recovery.”

About Milestones In Recovery:

At Milestones, we offer both live-in residential treatment and outpatient day treatment programs. The levels of care are determined by the recommendations of our clinical team and the needs of prospective patients. Doing so comes after a comprehensive pre-admission assessment and conversation with our clinical director. The most frequent types of eating disorders we treat include those referred to as Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder [BED], Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder [ARFID], Compulsive Overeating [COE], and Food Addiction [FA]. Most of the people we treat have cycled through or often experience an overlapping of symptoms associated with these.

Situated in the heart of South Florida, our program serves as a therapeutic community rather than the traditional hospital or residential center, allowing for a balance between structure and support and the more restrictive elements of most programs. To accomplish this, Milestones utilizes apartment-style residences with the conveniences and atmosphere of what our residential patients experience in most upscale communities. The residential program also provides 24/7 supervision and support through on-site resident managers. On-call medical and counseling staff and transportation are always available to ensure a secure, safe, yet less restrictive environment without compromising the quality of care afforded.

Apart from the residential setting, participants in the residential program [RTC] have opportunities to experience supervised grocery shopping, meal preparation, and most activities of daily living to achieve what we refer to as a “real-world” environment. Doing so makes Milestones stand out among other programs as our other mission is to make “the last day of treatment and the next day afterward the same.” Of note, the day treatment components often serve as a transitional level of care after completion of the residential stay. It should also be noted the day treatment programs may also serve as a “front entrance” to the residential level of care or as a “stand-alone” level of care- again depending on the pre-admission assessment and recommendation of the clinical team.

Our residential treatment program is open to local and out-of-area residents, with participants joining us from across the United States and internationally. We work with almost all insurance and managed care organizations except Medicare and Medicaid. Private pay is an option for those with limited or no insurance benefits for Milestones.

The Milestones Method ™:  A Little More About Our Program

Milestones in Recovery is a fully accredited and licensed facility recognized by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the Agency for Healthcare Administration [ACHA]. However, Milestones only considers individuals with a primary or co-existing eating disorder diagnosis for acceptance into the program. The professional staff is comprised of fully licensed clinical, medical, and nutritionists who bring with them a wealth of experience and expertise.

Leadership in the Field:

Led by CEO Marty Lerner, PhD, and COO Nikki Glantz, our executive team are leaders in their respective fields. Dr. Lerner is a licensed and board-certified Clinical Psychologist, and author who has extensively lectured and published several articles and a book about addictions and eating disorders. Nikki Glantz, R.D., is a Registered Dietitian and credentialed Nutritionist, is the creator of Milestone’s innovative food plan, “The Freedom Plan.” and is revered for her more than two decades of experience at Milestones working with eating-disordered patients.

“The Freedom Plan”:

Nikki’s innovative approach, “The Freedom Plan,” liberates from paralyzing anxiety and creates safety in food choices through a structured and empowering method. The Freedom Plan is a “playbook” for all aspects of disordered eating and co-occurring medical conditions such as diabetes and food allergies. Nikki’s Freedom Plan offers enough flexibility to meet most of her client’s specific needs and food preferences, yet enough structure and guidance to enable someone to meal plan, grocery shop, and meal prep while living with others. The Freedom Plan is intended to provide nutritional education in the service of healthy nutrition. It avoids the trap of calorie counting or focusing on weight change as the primary goal but rather on health. Mental and physical health, sustainability, and personal empowerment are the “end game” of “The Freedom Plan”.
