I first went to Milestones over 20 years ago, a few years after they opened their initial location. I have returned twice to their current facilities for recharges. I remain connected very much to Milestones, and without the tools I have been given and the tremendous support that exists throughout the program, but more importantly once you leave, I would not be alive. I am a severe food addict, bulimic and laxative addict with an explosive relationship to food. Some of the most renowned ED treatment centers in the US that follow the traditional tray method for food and a restricted living environment had me feeling hopeless on the day I was discharged. Milestones provides a real world living environment, where truly your last day there is as close to what your first day back at home will be like. These people Get It, they get food addiction, they get rock bottom. I would recommend anyone who feels hopeless with this disease to give Milestones a shot. I was introduced to the 12 steps, an abstinent food plan that was skillyfully crafted for me by Nikki (which I still have on paper from her and use as a base today), preparing and prepping sugar free food, how cross addiction to alcohol was presenting in my life, and learned to live ‘constructively’ following a few simple principles that their program is modeled after by its founder. Mostly, because of Milestones embracement of the addiction model, I was able to see my bulimia as a disease, not a moral problem. I was without judgement supported to release the shame and Do certain things to live a different kind of life. When the road has gotten rocky again, Milestones has held out a loving hand always offering me re-education of the simple and effective tools I learned in the beginning, guidance to get back on the course, and the support only a recovering community from addiction can give assuring me that I am not alone, a life in recovery IS possible and that very real hope that life can and will get better once the substances and behaviors are put down. Milestones is an amazing, very special place, run by dedicated staff who made me feel like I wasn’t a food freak, and 20 years later Milestones is at the top of my gratitude list every day. If you need help – Go, go, go…if you are debating, go. You may just get a new life!
